Two years ago I started learning memory verses as a part of the Memory Verse Team that Beth Moore started on her blog. It has been an amazing way to hear God speak to me through His Word. I decided to ask my friends and family if they will join me in learning new verses this year. On the 1st and 15th of each month we will learn a new verse. I have found that telling my friends about my memory verses is a way to help me keep my commitment to learn a new verse every two weeks. Please share your verse with us by commenting on this blog.

Memory Verse for 4/15/11

I chose this verse because this Easter season I want to think about how much we are loved and the sacrifice he made for me.

Ephesians 5:1-2, ESV
Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. 2 And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

April 1 Memory Verse

A little behind, but here is my memory verse for April 1. I choose it because I am behind on work. It is advising week and I have had many other little things that have kept me from getting my papers graded. This always makes me anxious. The end of the semester is also coming and this also is stressful. I don't want stress to steel my joy,so I chose this verse.

Psalms 94:18-19
When I said, 'My foot is slipping,' your unfailing love, LORD, supported me. When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.

Verse for 3/15/11

James 3:13
Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.

To be a wise person means to be a humble person. I am learning that true humility comes only when we submit to God's authority and quit trying to be our own savior and God. When we do that we know what deeds need to be done and we do them in his perfect power.

Memory Verse for 3/1/11

I decided on this verse because it is about the idea of winning approval. I need to remember that I don't get my self-image from other people. People, no matter how much I love them, will never be able to fill the longing I have for approval. Only Christ can do that.

Galatians 1:10, TNIV
Am I now trying to win human approval or God's approval? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people I would not be a servant of Christ.

Memory verse for 2/15/11

I found this verse by searching for the word guide in my bible. I was looking for a verse for a devotion for the faculty and staff prayer time. I think the thing that we need to pray for the most is God's guidance. I found this familiar verse and decided to memorize it.

Isaiah Isaiah 58:11
The LORD will guide you always;
he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land
and will strengthen your frame.
You will be like a well-watered garden,
like a spring whose waters never fail.

Memory Verse for 2/11

I am a little early on this one, but I have more time to do this on Sunday afternoon.

My verse this time was one that was quoted in a sermon by Dr. Timothy Keller. I have really enjoyed reading his books, The Prodigal God and Counterfeit Gods. The verse was a familiar one to me and comes in Ecclesiastes after the long list of "There is a time for . . . " It spoke to me in several ways. One was the the thought that God will make us beautiful - it is a process that we can't understand now but we will in eternity.

Ecceliastes 3:11 TNIV
He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.
