Two years ago I started learning memory verses as a part of the Memory Verse Team that Beth Moore started on her blog. It has been an amazing way to hear God speak to me through His Word. I decided to ask my friends and family if they will join me in learning new verses this year. On the 1st and 15th of each month we will learn a new verse. Memory Verse for 12/1/11

I was late in selecting a verse this time. December 1 was here before I realized it. I just couldn't find a verse that was right. Then last night at the Christmas tree lighting at the music building I heard very familiar scripture in a new way. It is so interesting how God's word is like that. I have chosen John 1:1-5 for this time and next time I am going to memorize following verses. I just was reminded how Mary held this baby that had created the whole world and was amazed again by Jesus love and sacrifice.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

I am a little late on this one. We were camping for Fall Break and I didn't have Internet access.

I chose this one for my children. I am so pleased that they are both actively involved in a church. I wand to always encourge them since my church has been such an important part of my life.

Memory Verse for September 15


September 15th Bible Verse
Before I share my verse I wanted to share with you the words to a song from the album, “When the Stars Burn Down” by one of my favorite worship leaders, Travis Cottrell. The title of the song is “Word of God Has Spoken.” I think the lyrics help explain why I really want to encourage you to take this memory challenge and memorize God’s word. Here are the words to the chorus:

Memory Verse for 7/1/11

We had a wonderful wedding and are so happy. For my verse this time I am going to continue memorizing 1 Corinthians 13. It has really helped me think about all the familiar words by memorizing them.

It is only 10 days until the wedding. For the memory verse for today, which is Meredith's birthday, I am continuing on with the next 3 verses of 1 Corinthians 13.

June 1 Memory Verse

With all the excitement in our family about the wedding of our good friend, Kara, and my daughter, Meredith I am late on posting my memory verse for June 1. I have chosen a very familiar passage about love for this month in honore of all weddings.

April 1 Memory Verse

A little behind, but here is my memory verse for April 1. I choose it because I am behind on work. It is advising week and I have had many other little things that have kept me from getting my papers graded. This always makes me anxious. The end of the semester is also coming and this also is stressful. I don't want stress to steel my joy,so I chose this verse.

To be a wise person means to be a humble person. I am learning that true humility comes only when we submit to God's authority and quit trying to be our own savior and God. When we do that we know what deeds need to be done and we do them in his perfect power.

Memory Verse for 3/1/11

I decided on this verse because it is about the idea of winning approval. I need to remember that I don't get my self-image from other people. People, no matter how much I love them, will never be able to fill the longing I have for approval. Only Christ can do that.

Am I now trying to win human approval or God's approval? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people I would not be a servant of Christ.

Memory verse for 2/15/11

I found this verse by searching for the word guide in my bible. I was looking for a verse for a devotion for the faculty and staff prayer time. I think the thing that we need to pray for the most is God's guidance. I found this familiar verse and decided to memorize it.

Memory Verse for 2/11

I am a little early on this one, but I have more time to do this on Sunday afternoon.

My verse this time was one that was quoted in a sermon by Dr. Timothy Keller. I have really enjoyed reading his books, The Prodigal God and Counterfeit Gods. The verse was a familiar one to me and comes in Ecclesiastes after the long list of "There is a time for . . . " It spoke to me in several ways. One was the the thought that God will make us beautiful - it is a process that we can't understand now but we will in eternity.

He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.

1/15/11 Memory VerseI

I decided I needed to find a verse in the Old Testament, so I went back through my underlined verses in my e-Bible and I found this one. I liked it because it talked about how God's mercies are new every morning. I am going to pray that God will keep my eyes open excited about the mercies he will show me every day.

Memory Verse for 1/1/11

Here is my first verse for the new year. I chose this verse because it encourages me to keep on living my life in Christ and to do it thankfully. 

Colossians 2: 6-7, TNIV
So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.

Tips for Memorizing Verses

Here are some things that I do that have helped me with memorizing verses.

I keep a list of verses that I read in my daily bible readings or hear at church. Then when the 1st or 15th comes around I go back to the list and choose one. I keep my list on my phone but you can keep it on a sheet of paper in your bible.

I write the verse on a card. It helps me to memorize if I actually write it. I also type it in something - my screen saver on my computer or in a word processing document.

I started using index cards but they were too bulking if I wanted to carry them with me. I started using the blank business cards that you can buy for printers. I just break them apart and write on them. Mine fit in a a coin purse that I had. On the front of the card I put
  • the date in the the upper left conner
  • the reference in the center of the card (this way I can cover the reference with my thumb when I am learning the verse
  • a phrase or question, for example on my current verse I put "For the new year and my family"
I write the verse out on the back of the card. 

I say my verse each day as a part of my quiet time. It helps to work on the verse each day. I also found it works better to actually say it out loud.

I look at the verse and divide it into phrases and parts then I learn it by the phrases. So I memorize the first phrase and just read the other phrases over several times. I gradually add each new phrase. 

Memory Verse Challenge

I will post my verse on the 1st and 15th of each month as a way to get us started. Then anyone who wants to participate by memorizing or maybe just concentrating hard on a new verse can post that verse in a comment. You can choose any verse you want. If you don't have a verse then you may find that you really liked one that someone else chose. You can start off easy by memorizing verses that are familiar to you. I think it will be really interesting for us to see what verses God has put in our hearts.

How to Post a Comment
If you have never used a blog before, it really isn't that hard. If you create a blog you are the owner of the blog. You add to your blog by making a blog post. At the end of the post will be a link that will allow others to comment on your post. So for this blog I will make a post on the 1st and 15th of each month with my verse. All you have to do to post a comment is
  1. Click on word "comments"  at the end of the post
  2. A box will appear for you to type in your comment. In your comment you can just type your verse with the reference and translation or type your verse and add your name and the reason that you selected the verse. 
  3. Under the comment box you will see the words "Comment as:" with a drop down box. From this box you will "Select profile." If you have a Google Account then you can check that option. If you don't then just select "Anonymous".
  4. After you finish, click on "Post Comment" you will get a Word Verification box that will ask you to type the letters that you see in the box. This helps to keep out spam.
